Hi, I'm Georgina Ryan,
an applied mathematician from Melbourne, Australia currently based in Oxford.

I am an applied mathematician who specialises in continuum mechanics, asymptotic analysis,  and modelling electrochemical systems. 

I am currently studying for a DPhil in Mathematics at the University of Oxford. I am supervised by Professor Ian Griffiths and Professor Mohit Dawaldi in the Oxford Centre for Industrial and Applied Mathematics.

I completed my Master of Science (Mathematics and Statistics) at the University of Melbourne in 2023, majoring in Applied Mathematics and Mathematical Biology. I won the Professor Wilson Prize (2024) for the highest-scoring thesis and the M L Urquhart Graduate Prize (2024) for being the best performing student overall in the mathematics masters.

Throughout my career, I hope to advocate for the place of underrepresented groups in mathematics. I have a significant amount of experience working with young people through my extensive volunteering with United Nations Youth Australia, particularly being National President in 2021, and through other tutoring and volunteering roles.

I am always excited to hear about opportunities to be involved in EDI work in mathematics. In 25-26 I was President of Mathematrix,  a student group discussing matters affecting minority early-career researchers in mathematics at the University of Oxford. Mathematrix co-organises the Oxford Women and Non-Binary People in Mathematics Day. I was also a 2025-26 ED&I Fellow for the Oxford Mathematical, Physical and Life Sciences (MPLS) Division, and was awarded a High Commendation for the "Outstanding ED&I Champion – Student" category by MPLS. 

In my spare time, I run a mathematical embroidery outreach project called 'Threaded Theorems'. Other outreach work I'm often involved in includes the Oxford Online Maths Club (see talk here) and events like the Oxford Maths Festival and It All Adds Up.
